I moved into a new house just over 3 years ago. One of the first things I did was start a vegetable garden. After three years of building beds, creating a compost pile, planting vegetables and preparing the soil, I have started to wonder what goes into the garden, and what I get out.
So this year I will be recording everything I put into the garden- both physical and monetarily. My goal is not be be ‘profitable’, my goal is to have fun while growing some food in the backyard.
But I might as well try to figure out what a profit & loss statement would look like for a backyard garden.
It will be interesting to find out what the typical garden means to a family’s bottom line.
OKAY- I failed! I am no longer tracking what exactly goes in/out of the garden, but I am still blogging! Take a look and let me know what you think.

One day’s harvest from the garden in August. I’m hoping for a lot more days like this.
Where is my garden?
My garden is in my backyard…my backyard is in Woodland, California. That’s just about smack dab in the middle of the state.
Woodland is in Yolo County- there is a lot of agriculture here. Tomatoes, alfalfa, sunflowers. Lots of things are grown.
This means that the conditions are right for having a garden!
